Description
Custom molded pulp inserts position a product inside its shipping carton. The design starts with the product geometry, weight and contact surfaces, then considers how the packed assembly will be handled and transported.
Design around the product and carton
Support rigid areas without loading fragile edges, switches or connectors. Leave clearance where movement could damage a finish. The outer carton is part of the design: changing its size or board construction can change the behavior of the complete pack.
Project details for a quotation
| Design input | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Product geometry | Dimensioned drawing or 3D file, overall tolerances and a sample where available |
| Weight and support | Product mass, center of gravity, permitted support points and fragile areas |
| Surface contact | Cosmetic surfaces, abrasion restrictions and areas that must remain clear |
| Pack assembly | Number of inserts, accessories, packing sequence and outer-carton dimensions |
| Distribution | Parcel or pallet shipment, storage conditions and the required transport-test protocol |
| Production and packing | Annual or order quantities, nesting requirements, packing units and delivery destination |
From design review to an approved sample
Confirm the drawing revision, contact points and carton before evaluating a prototype. Assemble the sample with the actual product and accessories. Check loading, removal, fit and movement, then assess the complete package against the agreed transport requirements. Record any changes before approving the production reference.
Purchasing questions
Can molded pulp replace a foam insert directly?
A material change usually requires a structural review. Copying the outline of the existing foam does not establish equivalent protection. Compare the complete package using the same product and test requirements.
How should nesting and storage be specified?
Identify the quantity per stack, stack dimensions and acceptable separation force. These details affect storage space and how easily operators can remove inserts on the packing line.
When can tooling and delivery be confirmed?
Include the approved design inputs, order quantity and target arrival date. Tooling, sample review, production and transport should be separated in the project schedule; a design change may require another sample review.
